Sage Studio



Sage Studio offers the ultimate learning experience for anyone interested in the world of theatre. All classes are led by working professional actors, directors, and designers (including those from Raue Center’s award-winning Williams Street Repertory) who offer advice and insight into the fast-paced and ever-changing professional theatre landscape, giving students a chance to make important connections and learn from the best. All classes have a maximum class size of 16 students, to ensure personal attention and a hands-on experience. We offer a wide variety of classes in acting, musical theatre, and theatre production, so there’s truly something for every student to explore their passion and build their skills. Our students have gone on to pursue their careers at top colleges and universities, and appear in productions across Chicagoland—including right here with WSR!

  • INTIMATE PLAYS IN EPICALLY THEATRICAL WAYS: with playwright Deborah Yarchun.

    In this seminar, you'll explore writing intimate plays, strategies to developing dimensional characters and
    creating a work strictly intended for the theater. This seminar is part lecture, part discussion, part writing
    workshop. Intended for writers at all stages.
  • Bio: Deborah Yarchun's plays have been developed at theaters and universities across the United States and Canada. Deborah’s honors include two Jerome Fellowships at The Playwrights’ Center, The Kennedy Center’s Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award, a Tennessee Williams Scholarship, University of Iowa’s Richard Maibaum Playwriting Award, and the Iowa Arts Fellowship.     This summer, Sage Studio proudly presents the third course in their intensive series focusing on core theatre skills--and this time, we're tackling dance! This class is suitable for ALL levels of dancers--from experienced performers looking to refine their skills in popular musical theatre styles, to "singers who move" who are looking to build their dance vocabulary and shine at their next dance call. Our working-professional instructors will focus on technique and terminology, then put that technique to work in a variety of choreographed dance combinations, utilizing popular styles such as jazz, ballet, tap and hip-hop to explore all facets of the genre, and the power of dance to tell stories onstage. A perfect class for any student looking to ace that next dance call, or to build skills for college auditions--and a very fun environment to learn and grow with your peers!

    Ever dream of a career in musical theatre?  This is the workshop for you!  Sage Studio is proud to once again present its popular signature workshop: a three-week intensive musical theatre program for students ages 14-18, led by Sage Studio program manager Amanda Flahive--who's appeared in 22 shows as an original ensemble member of Williams Street Repertory, the in-house professional theatre company at Raue Center for the Arts. Students will explore all aspects of classic and modern musical theatre, with a focus on the three core performance disciplines unique to the genre--acting, singing, and dance.  With special sessions on audition technique, improvisation, movement and vocal health, as well as guest instructors including veterans of the Chicago and New York theatre scene, this class is a true immersive experience for young performers, helping them to develop as artists and young theatre professionals--and a must for any student with plans to pursue a theatre career.  This workshop culminates in a showcase of songs and scenes on the stage of the Raue Center for the Arts!
  • PREREQUISITES: Students must exhibit an appreciation and aptitude for musical theatre. Students are also required to submit a video audition of a musical theatre song (no more than three minutes)--this can be accompanied or a capella.     Back for another sure to sell out class in the Sage Studio Junior series, introducing young students to the exciting world of musical theatre performance. In this one week program, instructors will focus on all aspects of acting, movement, dance, and vocal technique to give students a glimpse into the craft of this vibrant art form, foster their creativity and talent, and help them develop as young performers. The class culminates in a showcase for friends and family!

Ages 15-18

Join us for a 2-day intensive acting workshop where students will get the chance to delve into what makes acting a "process".  Explore the multiple elements and aspects of acting ranging from: trust, discovery, honesty, exploration, connection, and much more.  Advanced Acting is comprised of numerous exercises, which will culminate into a full ensemble assignment and have your students walk away with tools to allow them to nail those auditions!

TRIPLE THREAT: Auditioning for Musical Theatre

Ages 15-18

Back by popular demand, this advanced workshop for teen performers is designed to hone audition skills in the three key musical theatre performance areas—acting, singing and dance—and ends with an audition opportunity for industry professionals!

SHOWTUNE STYLES: from R&B to Rock-N-Roll

Ages 15-18

This fun workshop for teen singers focuses on the ever-changing world of musical theatre song styles--where students will study “classical” and “contemporary” repertoire, and put their knowledge into practice by learning and performing songs from each era. Perfect for students prepping for college entrance auditions, this class culminates in a recital for friends and family!

STOLEN SCENES: scene study for young actors

Ages 15-18

For an actor, nailing that big audition is only half the battle--the real challenge comes once rehearsals begin and you start to work on that big scene.  With this in mind, Sage Studio once again offers this four-week course for high school actors focused on the craft of scene study.  Students will work in small groups on scenes from contemporary plays, with a focus on making bold choices, character analysis, and learning practical strategies for making the moment come alive onstage--and making that moment a show-stopper!  The workshop culminates in a showcase of prepared scenes for friends and family.


Ages 14-18

Our signature workshop is back for its fourth year and more popular than ever—a three-week intensive musical theatre program for students ages 14-18, culminating in a showcase of songs and scenes on the stage of the Raue Center for the Arts! 

NO HOLDS BARD:  Shakespeare & Swords

Ages 14 – 18

Sage Studio is proud to present No Holds Bard, a class devoted to teaching the basics of Shakespearean language through the fundamentals of hand-to-hand stage combat and classical rapier swordplay.  By using tested vocal and physical exercises to unlock and demystify Shakespeare’s text, students will learn how to safely conduct themselves to depict realistic stage violence; “suiting the Action to the word, the word to the Action”.  Students will learn basic falls, tumbles, punches, and grabs as well as how to safely and effectively thrust, parry, and slash with stage worthy steel swords. 

READY FOR MY CLOSE UP: Acting for the camera.

Ages 7-18

Our on-camera acting class is designed to give young actors the skills and insights into working in front of the camera for commercials, television and film. In this new class students learn commercial audition techniques in a one-on-one style where our professional and industry-working instructor prepares the students for professional-style auditions and work environment.

 Sage Studio Junior is proud to offer a class for the young “triple threat,” or for any kid who’s been wanting to try their hand at the exciting and vibrant art of musical theatre! This introduction to musical theatre will teach kids all about the process of creating a character, vocal technique and unique choreography combinations along with theatre games to stretch those creativity muscles—and help build the confidence they need to chase those big dreams and take the stage by storm in their next production. Parents will be able to observe the final class to see their young stars strut their stuff!

READY, SET, ACT!: Acting for young performers


Do you have a dramatic personality in your family that's looking for a stage?  We've got a class for them!  This introduction to the craft of acting will use theatre games and creative play techniques to help bring students out of their shells and into the bright lights of the stage, and teach them the basics of theatre. Parents will be able to observe the last class and see the hard work come to life!
